I want to share a little story of a time when I struggled to make my dreams a reality. I finally realised I could make them happen and all because of a giant pair of Ugg Boots.
In early 2014, I was already living in Spain after leaving my workaholic lifestyle as a Lawyer in the UK behind. One dream accomplished. Woo hoo!
I was in the process of figuring out my life in terms of my work as a Life Coach and what I wanted my daily life to look like. I was determined to follow my dreams yet aware that I was really limiting myself in terms of my mindset and what I thought I was capable of achieving.
I needed to step up and step up big time.
Around this time, I had a really vivid dream. (Sleep dream that is). I was being shown around my new home by a Real Estate Agent and it was so beautiful. Massive. More rooms than I could ever imagine. A complete blank canvas for me to paint my life. I felt in awe and a little intimidated. The potential was unbelievable.
As the Realtor handed me the keys at the front door and wished me all the best in my new home, I saw a friend sat on a bench outside.
“Hello Sam,” they said. “How are you and why are you wearing such big boots?” as they stared in disbelief at my feet.
I looked down at my feet to see that I was wearing the biggest pair of Ugg Boots I’ve ever seen. Not just large boots. HUGE boots at least twice the size of my feet!
“I’m really good. I´ve just got the keys to my new pad. These shoes? I need to grow into them and I’ve got a lot of growing to do, huh?” I chuckled.
I woke up at that point and laughed to myself. Giant Ugg boots indeed! I turned over, settled down to sleep with the thought “but the house was so beautiful”. Hmmm.
The next morning, it hit me that the dream was symbolic of my life. The subconscious is such a powerful thing. The house was my life and my shoes were too big for a reason. Our dreams always come a size too big.
I’d broken free of my old life and had the keys to my new life to begin. The potential of what I could create was enormous.
But I had to grow into my new life. I had to grow in confidence, in self-belief, willpower and determination, if I was really going to create the best life I could imagine.
Most importantly, I was also going to have to drop a lot of stuff. I was going to have to let go of thoughts, beliefs and behaviour patterns that were restricting my growth into the new shoes I’d found myself wearing.
Because dreams always come a size too big and I needed a mindset of freedom to make it all happen.
Life was going to test me and I had to step up to the plate, giant Ugg Boots and all.
As the years have passed, the dream of the giant Ugg Boots still crosses my mind and I gauge how I now measure up in terms of my personal development, my life and whether I’m achieving my goals.
Have a grown into my new shoes yet? The boots are still a little too large and probably always will be. There’s always room to expand on my dreams.
And my life? I’m loving it. Every minute of it. I’m living a great adventure! I see my life as a work of art, as I paint my own canvas, and there’s always room to grow. To add my colour. There’s always, always room to add more life.
So back to the message behind the story. Our dreams come a size too big for a reason. To give us the opportunity to let go and grow in our belief in ourselves and what we can achieve. We always have room to grow wilder, bigger and bolder. To expand our perception of what’s possible. What we believe, we really can achieve. So long as we have the right mindset.
